Be a Buoy

Out in the open water, the ocean can look endless.
No roads. No street signs. No obvious direction.

But if you’ve ever approached a harbor, you’ll notice something important.

There are buoys.

Floating markers that quietly guide boats safely home.

They don’t chase ships.
They don’t shout instructions.
They simply stand where they are placed, visible and steady, marking the safe channel.

For a captain navigating fog, darkness, or rough water, those buoys mean everything.
They say:

You’re close.
Stay between these markers.
Safe harbor is ahead.

In life, many people are navigating waters just like that.

Some are lost in grief.
Some are drifting in addiction.
Some are exhausted from trying to carry everything alone.

From the outside they may look fine, but inside they are trying to find a safe way through the channel.

That’s where we come in.

God calls us to be like those buoys.

Not perfect.
Not controlling the ships.
Not forcing direction.

Just visible markers of hope.

A steady presence.
A kind word.
A listening ear.
A life that quietly reflects something different.

Sometimes the greatest service we can give another person is simply being noticeable in the right way — reflecting love, patience, faith, and compassion.

Because when someone is navigating dark waters, even a small light can guide them toward safety.

Jesus said:

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
— Matthew 5:14

Light and buoys share something in common.

They exist so others can find their way home.

So today, wherever God has placed you, be visible.

Be steady.
Be kind.
Be present.

You never know who is out there searching the horizon, hoping to see a marker that tells them:

Safe harbor is near.

And sometimes, John, the buoy guiding them…
might be you.
