“Pray as if everything depends on God, work as if everything depends on you.” — St. Augustine
I recently came across this quote, and it really hit home for me in understanding our relationship with God. Yes, God can provide miracles, and His grace is beyond anything we can comprehend—but most of what we ask for also requires our participation.
Faith is not passive. Prayer is not meant to replace action, but to align us with the strength, wisdom, and courage to move forward. Often, that courage is needed most in the face of fear—when the path is uncertain, when doubt is loud, and when taking the next step feels uncomfortable.
So many of the things I’ve prayed for in life came to pass not by waiting alone, but by trusting first and then stepping forward anyway. Sometimes the miracle is not that the fear disappears, but that God gives us the courage to move through it.
God opens doors, but we still have to walk through them.
I’ve found that the greatest blessings often come when faith leads and effort follows—when we surrender the outcome to Him, trust Him with the unknown, and remain fully responsible for the work placed in front of us.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
This scripture reminds me that courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision to move forward knowing God is with us. We are not asked to have all the answers—only the willingness to trust Him enough to take the next step.
Prayer
Lord, give me the faith to trust You fully and the courage to move when fear tries to hold me back. Help me to pray with surrender, work with purpose, and walk forward with confidence knowing You go before me. Let my effort reflect my faith, and my heart remain centered on You. Amen.
