Find God in the Small

I overheard a simple exchange between a mother and her young child.

A man held the door open for them. The mother smiled and said thank you, then gently turned to her son and asked, “What do you say?”
In his tiny voice—full of effort and sincerity—the boy replied, “Thank you!”
The man smiled back and said, “You’re so welcome.”

As they walked on, I heard the mother ask one more question:
“Would you like a cookie or chips?”
Their voices faded as I moved away.

It seems almost silly to commemorate such a small moment. In the grand scheme of things, it meant nothing.
And yet, it meant something to me.

I was present enough to hear it. Present enough to notice it. Present enough to enjoy it for exactly what it was.

I give that moment to God—not because it was extraordinary, but because it was ordinary. A quiet reminder that grace doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes it whispers through kindness, through manners taught gently, through the innocence of a child choosing between a cookie and chips.

Thank You, God, for the gift of presence.
For allowing me to witness the small.
For the purity of a child’s voice, unguarded and sincere.

A little child shall lead them.

In that moment, I felt close to the soul of what You intended—
faith in the good,
stillness,
and the simple joy of being here.

Scripture

“A little child shall lead them.”
— Isaiah 11:6

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”
— Luke 16:10

Closing Prayer

Thank You, God, for allowing me to see the small—
and to recognize it as something grand.
Thank You for the gift of presence,
for quiet moments filled with Your grace,
and for the way You speak through the ordinary.
Help me to remain attentive, grateful, and awake
to the sacred moments You place before me each day.
Amen.
