God Is a Gentleman

I once heard in an AA meeting that God is a gentleman.

He doesn’t force His way in.

He doesn’t intrude or demand control of our lives.

He remains faithful and patient—waiting quietly, watching our steps, anticipating the day we finally ask Him to enter.

A true gentleman only arrives by invitation.

So often, it is our stubbornness that keeps the door closed. Our pride. Our need to manage, fix, and protect ourselves. Yet the moment we soften—when we surrender and pray, “Lord, won’t You enter my life?”—everything begins to change.

And oh, how we need our friend Jesus.

Jesus is not distant. He is near.

He is our love, our Savior, our steady companion in weakness and doubt.

He is the One who walks with us when we are tired of walking alone.

He is the Way.

Once welcomed, He becomes our confidant.

Our counselor.

Our comforter in every sorrow and fear.

He does not shame us for where we’ve been.

He meets us where we are—and leads us home.

Scripture

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.”

— Revelation 3:20

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

— John 14:6

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,

We lay down our resistance and our need for control.

We open the door of our hearts and invite You in.

Come into our lives as our Savior and our friend.

Counsel us when we are confused.

Comfort us when we are weary.

Lead us when we cannot see the way forward.

We surrender ourselves to You—not out of fear, but out of trust.

Have Your way in us, Lord.

We welcome You.

Amen.
