Switchfoot - Meant To Live
Listening to Switchfoot’s “Meant to Live,” I hear a struggle I recognize in myself: the distance between who I’ve learned to be in the world and who God is calling me to become.
The song opens with someone “fumbling his confidence,” wondering whether life has passed him by. I know that feeling. When my identity rests on accomplishments, approval, or being right, every disappointment feels personal. Something goes wrong, and suddenly I’m questioning my worth.
Then comes the question: “Have we lost ourselves?”
Sometimes I think I lose myself a little at a time. I become so occupied with my reputation, responsibilities, and opinions that I barely notice how little room I’m leaving for God. I’m defending an image of myself while neglecting the soul beneath it.
“Maybe we’ve been livin’ with our eyes half open.”
That line makes me pause. How often am I awake to everything demanding my attention, yet asleep to God’s presence? I notice the criticism, the controversy, the thing I don’t have. Meanwhile, someone needs my kindness, a blessing goes unrecognized, and another opportunity to be present slips away.
Jesus said:
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” — John 10:10, KJV
When the song says, “We want more than this world’s got to offer,” I hear the ache of a soul that success and approval cannot fully satisfy. I’ve asked those things to tell me who I am. They’ve never given me an answer that lasts.
God invites me to know myself as someone He loves—and to let that love shape how I live.
Maybe that’s where finding myself begins: getting quiet enough to hear Him, becoming honest about what I’m chasing, and trusting Him with who I’m becoming.
“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” — KJV
Prayer:
God, show me where I’ve built my identity around things that pull me away from You. Open my eyes to Your presence. Help me receive Your love and live from it, with less need to prove myself and more willingness to give of myself. Amen.
