That I Would Be Good

One of my favorite Alanis Morissette songs isThat I Would Be Good.’ There’s something steady and reassuring in it—it feels like a quiet promise beneath all the noise. Not that everything looks good in the moment, but that somehow, in the end, it will be. Almost like a whisper from God: all will be well.

So much of my life has been spent living in the future—running scenarios, creating stories, trying to control outcomes that haven’t even arrived. It’s exhausting. The mind pulls me into a spin cycle of “what ifs,” and before I know it, I’m reacting to things that don’t even exist.

But I’m learning to step back. To remember that I am not the storm of thoughts—I am the one watching them. The observer, not the captive. The actor, yes—but not the scriptwriter of fear.

Be still, and know that I am God.Psalm 46:10

And when I come back to God, the message is simple, even if it’s not always easy: no matter what, He has us. In the good, and in the bad.

The truth is, we spend so much of our lives trying to avoid suffering. Understandably so. Pain is painful. Loss is heavy. But if we look at the life of Jesus—the Son of God—He was not spared from suffering. He was crushed, rejected, and crucified. That alone reframes the expectation that this life should be easy or without hardship.

After you have suffered a little while, He will restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.1 Peter 5:10

There’s something grounding in that. Suffering is not the end of the story—it’s a passage, not a destination.

And within that truth, there is real hope.

We will be good. Not because everything goes our way, but because everything is held in His hands. This life, as overwhelming as it can feel, is still just a moment—an ephemeral glimpse of eternity. A chapter, not the whole book.

Even when we feel lost… we are not lost.
Even when we feel broken… we are not beyond repair.
Even when we think we’re not held… we are.

What’s coming will come. But God is already there. Christ is already there. Ready to meet us, to restore us, to gather every broken piece of despair and make something whole again.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.Romans 8:28

So try as we may to control it all, to fix it all, to think our way into safety… we are already heading toward where we’ve always been meant to be.

Saved.

Prayer
Lord, quiet my mind when it runs ahead of You. Help me trust You in both the good and the hard, knowing You are present in all of it. When fear rises, remind me to be still and rest in Your promise that all will be well. Strengthen me through whatever I face, and keep my heart anchored in You. Amen.
