Less you more God

The Spotlight Effect is a cognitive bias where people vastly overestimate how much others notice, observe, or remember them. Because we are the center of our own internal world, the mind assumes everyone else is paying the same close attention to our actions, mistakes, appearance, and importance.

My mother — God bless her soul — showered me with compliments growing up.
“You’re handsome.”
“You’re smart.”
“You’re the best at this or that.”

And every child needs love and encouragement. But somewhere along the way, that praise can quietly become identity. We begin constructing a version of ourselves that feels larger than life, a persona that seeks validation, recognition, and control. Without realizing it, self-importance can create a wedge between God and us.

The danger of the Spotlight Effect is not just thinking people notice you — it’s believing they should. It’s the subtle illusion that the world revolves around our story, our image, our success, our pain, our performance. In many ways, the ego wants to become a “small god,” seeking worship through attention, admiration, or significance.

But the Kingdom of God moves in the opposite direction.

In AA there’s a saying:
“Just be a bozo on the bus.”

In other words, relax your need to be extraordinary. Stop trying to sit in the front row of importance. Just be another imperfect soul traveling through life under the grace of God.

To be a child of God requires no résumé, no status, no applause. The call is not “Look at me,” but rather, “How can I serve?” True peace begins when we become comfortable not being the center of attention. Humility is not thinking less of yourself — it is thinking of yourself less.

And strangely enough, when the ego quiets down, God becomes easier to hear.

Today, Lord, let me live more concerned with Your eyes than the world’s eyes. You already see me completely. You know the number of hairs on my head before I speak a single word. (Luke 12:7)

Let me be content being nobody special in the world’s eyes, while being fully known and loved by You.
For that is more than enough.
