“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” — Proverbs 16:9
We spend much of our lives trying to control outcomes.
We plan. We strategize. We hope. We worry. We grip tightly to what we think should happen.
Yet life has a way of humbling our plans.
Doors close unexpectedly. Relationships shift. Opportunities disappear. Prayers seem unanswered. And in those moments, the heart wrestles with disappointment because we often confuse our timeline with God’s will.
But Proverbs 16:9 reminds us of something deeply comforting:
We may chart the course, but God directs the steps.
That means even when things don’t unfold the way we hoped, we are not abandoned. We are being guided.
Sometimes God says yes.
Sometimes He says wait.
Sometimes He lovingly removes what would have harmed us, distracted us, or kept us from becoming who He created us to be.
Faith is not believing God will give us everything we want.
Faith is trusting that God sees farther than we do.
The difficult truth is this: many of the things we once begged for would have eventually broken us. And many of the disappointments we resisted became the very roads that shaped our character, softened our hearts, and brought us closer to Him.
Peace comes when we stop demanding certainty and start trusting His direction.
If it is God’s will, nothing can stop it.
No person. No setback. No closed door. No delay.
And if it is not His will, forcing it will only create exhaustion.
God does not withhold to punish us. He redirects to protect us.
The soul finally rests when it realizes:
“I do not have to carry the burden of controlling everything. God is already ahead of me.”
Even the detours belong to Him.
Scripture
Romans 8:28 — “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.”
Jeremiah 29:11 — “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord…
Psalm 37:23 — “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him.”
Prayer
Lord, help me trust Your plan even when I do not understand it.
Teach me to release my need to control outcomes and to walk in faith instead of fear.
When doors close, give me peace.
When answers delay, give me patience.
And when life changes direction, remind me that You are still guiding every step.
Amen.
