Love, absolute

What is truly certain in our lives here on earth?

Is it that the sun will rise tomorrow?
That the tide will reach the shore?
That we will wake up to see another day?
That our weekend plans will unfold just as we imagine?

Will we reach our destination on our morning commute?
Can we guarantee our next breath… or the next beat of our heart?

These are the things we quietly build our expectations upon, the small certainties we assume will always hold.

But the truth is this: very little in this world is absolute.

Except one thing.

The one thing God pre-wired into us from the very beginning — love.

There is no debate about the love we have for our children, our parents, our families, and those closest to us. It needs no proof and no explanation. It simply exists.

I've heard it said that we are born with only one fear — the fear of falling. But we are also born with one certainty: the capacity to love.

Love requires no training.
No education.
No explanation.

It simply lives within us.

You cannot quantify love. You cannot measure it or contain it. Yet it is the greatest gift we possess — one that transcends this life and reaches into the next.

Because of this, I try to direct my attention there — toward love.

When I meet people, I try not to ask first about their job or their vacation plans. I ask about their kids.

Or their dog — that’s always a favorite of mine.

Ask someone about their dog and watch what happens. Their face changes. Their voice lifts. Something deep inside them wakes up.

Love comes forward.

And in those moments, something sacred shows itself. Something almost God-like.

Because love is not just something we feel.

It is something we are.

I've heard many stories from those who have come close to death — near-death experiences where people describe moving toward a light, feeling an overwhelming peace, a pull forward that feels both powerful and familiar.

Many say they feel drawn toward those they loved who had gone before them.

What is the force pulling them forward?

What is the homing device guiding them?

Love.

We may debate where we go when this life ends — heaven, another dimension, the presence of God.

But one thing seems certain:

The same love that lives in our hearts here on earth will guide us there.

Because love does not belong only to this life.

It belongs to eternity.

And when the day comes that we take our final breath, it may very well be love itself that leads us home.

Scripture

1 Corinthians 13:13
"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

1 John 4:16
"God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them."

Closing Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for the gift You placed inside every one of us — the gift of love.

In a world where so little feels certain, remind us that love is the thread that connects us to You and to one another.

Help us to notice it, nurture it, and share it freely with those around us.

And when our time here is finished, may that same love be the light that guides us home to You.

Amen.
