Trust Beyond Understanding

The more I reflect on life, my existence, and the world around me, the more convinced I become that true understanding is beyond human grasp. We may convince ourselves we've figured things out—that we know what is happening and why—but that confidence is often an illusion.

It is in my deepest moments of struggle that I realize some things were never meant for me to fully comprehend. Instead, I must leave understanding to God—the Creator, the One who alone knows all things.

Take something as simple and essential as air. Many can explain its composition or describe how it functions, but dig just a few layers deeper. Ask "why" a few more times, and even the greatest minds eventually reach the limits of their understanding. So it is with everything in life. A few questions in, and our certainty begins to unravel.

Scripture gently reminds us that our pursuit is not to understand everything, but to trust the One who does:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
—Proverbs 3:5–6

Perhaps we are not meant to explain everything. Perhaps the miracle is not found in understanding, but in simply being. To exist at all—to be conscious, to love, to experience this life—is itself a divine wonder. Rather than demanding answers, shouldn't we strive to live by faith, embracing the mystery with the confidence that God, in His infinite wisdom, is accomplishing something far greater than we can see?

Today, I wrestle with the pain of losing a family member. The reasons for their passing remain hidden from me and may remain so until the day I, too, cross over into eternity.

Yet even in my grief, I am reminded of Jesus standing before the tomb of Lazarus. He wept. Not because He lacked the power to change the outcome, but because He entered into our sorrow. He stood with those who mourned and shared in their pain.

Then He declared:

"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die."
—John 11:25

He called Lazarus from the grave—not merely to display His power, but to reveal His heart. Death does not have the final word. God does.

So let us not remain captive to sorrow or consumed by questions we cannot answer. Instead, let us stand in awe of the miracle of life, grateful that we were chosen to be here for such a time as this. And in all things—in joy and in grief, in certainty and in mystery—let us give glory to God, now and forever.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Teach us to trust You when we cannot understand. Quiet our minds when questions have no answers, and strengthen our hearts to rest in Your perfect will. Help us to walk by faith rather than by sight, knowing that Your wisdom is infinite, Your love is unfailing, and Your purposes are always good.

Comfort those who grieve, restore those who are weary, and remind us that through Christ, death is not the end but the doorway to eternal life. May we live each day in gratitude for the gift of life, in humility before Your mysteries, and in joyful expectation of the day we will see You face to face.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior,

Amen.
